RC 17 IMPHAL REGIONAL CENTRE MANIPUR
In pursuance of the Notification F.No.IG/RSD/03/2000/2157 of the Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, dated the 14th November 2000, the Imphal Regional Centre become functional on the 1st December 2000. The first ever IGNOU official who headed this RC as the Regional Director-in-charge was Mr. Joseph Somi (appointed as Assistant Regional Director).
The three IGNOU Study Centres which had been in existence since late 1980s, viz, the Manipur University SC, Churachandpur College SC and Presidency College SC, Motbung were functioning under the administrative support of the Shillong Regional Centre till they were subsequently brought under the administrative control of the Imphal Regional Centre.Within the period from 2000 to 2005, as many as five new Study Centres and one Programme Study Centre (1708P) were established making the total of nine SC/PSCs .
On the 27th January 2006, Dr. R.K.Ranjit Singh assumed the office of the Regional Director for the Imphal Regional Centre. Dr. D. Joseph Kuba, the Assistant Regional Director also joined this RC in July 2006. Within one and half years (from 2006 January to Oct. 2007) two Study Centres at Senapati (Mt. Everest College) and Chandel (United College) respectively had been established in addition to two Programme Study Centres at Tamenglong (Tamenglong Higher Secondary School) and Churachandpur DIET specially for the Certificate in Primary Education (CPE) Programme.
By now all the five hill districts of Manipur have at least one Study Centre or a Programme Study Centre each. The hill district of Tamenglong is yet to have a Study Centre although there is one Programme Study Centre at the Tamenglong Higher Secondaray School (1711P). The Senapati district has three IGNOU study centres Of the valley districts, the Imphal East and Bishnupur districts are yet to have an IGNOU Study Centre.
